shedko Badges 1.5 – unique way to identify folders

Filed under: Desktop Enhancements, Software — Tags: , , — Quad Master @ 12:03 am

Imagine a program, which will forever change your notion of desktop icons. A program, which in a blink of an eye will assist you in searching lost files or imperceptible folders. A program, so simple and clear to use, and in the same time functional and innovative.

Shedko Software in association with Va-deam’s Lab presents "Badges".

Badges – the program, allowing placing handy emblems upon familiar Windows icons. From now there is no need to invent sophisticated file names, to drag icons to different corners of the screen or to seek new ico-files for having fast access to a folder with recent projects or with latest images. Place a badge on the desired icon and you will notice it immediately!

10 different kinds of badges, each represents its own semantic category: certified, cool, danger, delete, distinguished, favourite, important, new, personal and web. This will satisfy even exacting users. The quantity of the placed badges is unlimited.’

Key Features:

· Custom themes support. Badges uses special format SBZ as themes. These files are automatically associated with the program and are fully-processed (intuitive drag’n'drop). Want to create your own theme? You are welcome! Check out the "Badges Icon Design Guidelines", delivered in English and Russian languages.

· Seamless integration with Windows Explorer and core services. Badges adds handy items both to contextual menus and also to the file/folder properties tab. You can use simultaneously both options, but there is an opportunity to turn off unwanted one.

· Interaction with all Windows applications. If you place a badge upon a file, it can be seen not only in Explorer. Your badge will be shown in any "Open, "Save" etc. dialogue window.

· Exquisite design. Badges can brag of the refined interface and corporate identity by Va-deam’s Lab. The style will not disappoint both Vista Aero fans and Mac OS X Aqua adherents. The "Mellow" badges theme was specially created and is exclusively distributed with Badges. Mellow features bright colors, glass shine, clear lines and contrast. It looks brilliant at any size.

· Convenient manager for maintenance and control over all the badges you placed. If you put a lot of badges and moreover in various places, and then want to remove them, the built-in manager will come to the help! Use fully functional sorting for comfort display of the library and removal of unwanted badges.

· Unlike other programs, which operate with icons, Badges can place a badge even on removable disks, hard disks and network drives! Any badge can be shown even in the system tray if your storage device appears to be full.

While there are several web desktops available these days, the free and open source EyeOS application is the most accessible, useful, and promising one out there. Follow along to see what a web-based desktop looks like, and how it can help you get things done when you’re locked down or out of pocket.

Samsung unveils 2.5′ 500GB notebook HDD and Spinpoint MP2 250GB Hard Drive

Samsung Electronics today updated its hard drive offerings with two new drives, the 2.5″ Spinpoint M6 500GB for notebooks and 250GB Spinpoint MP2. Samsung said that it’s M6 is the “world’s first” 500GB laptop drive, but I think that title goes to Hitachi who had released a 2.5″ half-terabyte drive couple of days before Samsung unveiled their own version. And the interesting thing is that ASUS has already announced a Multimedia notebook M-Series with Hitachi’s 500GB 5K500 hard drive.

Samsung’s new Spinpoint M6 consists of three 167GB platters in a 2.5” hard drive frame measuring just 9.5mm in height. It features a 5400rpm spindle speed, a 8MB cache, and 3.0Gbps SATA interface with a Free-Fall-Sensor available as an optional feature.

The Spinpoint MP2 is targeted towards desktops and server segment. Its a 250GB 2.5” hard drive consisting of two 125GB disks, operating at a 7200rpm rotation speed. It also boast Samsung’s proprietary SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies to offer ultra quiet operation.

The Spinpoint M6 is currently shipping for $299 and the MP2 will be available to key OEM manufacturers from March 2008.

Sony working on 1 Terabit per square inch hard drive

Already jumping in the air? Sure, if you’re a nerd who likes to watch porn in HD. Reportedly, Sony is working on some cool new hard drive technology which will make those typical 160GB HDD redundant. This new tech packs one terabit data per square inch — that’s five times the density of existing hard disks!

The Inquirer reports, “it’s a basic technique for writing data based on magneto-optical hybrid recording. Data bits are written to disk medium using laser light concentrated on an almost microscopic area of disc. So it makes traditional storage more efficient.”

No word on when we’ll see the prototype.

Download 15 full-length Hollywood movies in one minute!

Filed under: Technology News — Tags: — Quad Master @ 8:46 am

If the researchers at Bangor University (Britain) have their way then in future you’ll be able to download 15 full-length Hollywood movies in one minute! Reportedly, they’ve developed a device which promises broadband 100 times faster and a quarter the price it is today. If the technology becomes successful then it’ll surely transform the communications industry, home life and the workplace.

(Press Release ahead)

A team of engineers at a British university have developed a device which promises broadband 100 times faster and a quarter the price it is today.

Using existing telecommunications but channelling the data more efficiently, the machine will be able to download 15 full-length Hollywood movies a minute, the team says.

The scientists at Bangor University are now set to build a prototype of their machine.

Dr Jianming Tang, of the university’s School of Electronic Engineering, hopes their efforts will transform the communications industry, home life and the workplace.

He said: “The new larger- and faster-capacity networks would revolutionise home entertainment, delivering high-speed high-definition films and television, high-power computer games and home video-conferencing facilities.

“This will make remote working far easier and could have many other applications such as supporting older people in their homes, enabling applications such as tele-medicine to flourish.”

Dr Tang has just been awarded the Royal Society Brian Mercer Feasibility Prize as part of the Royal Society’s annual From Labs To Riches event, designed to highlight the awards and schemes that boost innovation and wealth creation from science, engineering and technology.

Of the new device, he said today: “Importantly, it works with the existing fibre optic technology we have, so there is no need to rip out the cabling which runs the country’s telecommunications network.

“Projections have also shown a more efficient use of the network will cut costs for every user by up to 75 per cent.

He added it is too early to predict the high-street cost of the device, which will look very much like a DVD player and will sit between the broadband outlet and computer.

Anyone who thinks that downloading 15 feature films in a minute seems a trifle unnecessary should think again, Dr Tang suggested.

“People may wonder how we will use this far greater capacity but applications develop through use, as we have already seen with the internet and telecoms technology,” he said.

The team has been using funding of one million euros (£760,000) given to Bangor University to participate in a three-year EU-funded project called Alpha.

Install gOS in Ubuntu

The Ubuntu Geek blog gives us the skinny on how to install the web-app-focused gOS operating system, star of Wal-Mart’s $200 PC, on an Ubuntu system (or most any distro ending in -buntu, for that matter). While gOS is still available as a free download/live CD, placing it on your actual hard drive gives you a chance to see if it runs a little faster and smoother than your current *buntu system, and might make a convert out of you. To see what’s worth checking out, head over to Adam’s guide to turning an old PC into a webapp monster.

Track Price Drops at any Site with Price!pinx

Filed under: Shopping, Tips n Tricks — Tags: — Quad Master @ 8:42 am

Want to keep an ever-present eye on an item you just know is going to go discount at any moment? Price!pinx offers a price-watching service that doesn’t require searching (like PriceAmbush) or limit itself only to Amazon, eBay, or any other big-name site. You provide your email address to Price!pinx, then add their bookmarklet to your browser’s links bar. When you see a price you think/hope will go lower, highlight it and then hit the “!pinx” link. The site will then email you when it notices a drop in the digits. Looks like pretty handy stuff, although I haven’t had the good fortune to see an item go on sale in the last 30 minutes.

Make Site-Specific Searches Within Google Search Results

Filed under: Google Related — Quad Master @ 8:36 am

Google’s “site:whatever.com” function, which lets you search for a term inside a specific web site. Now the search engine has made it possible to do this-site-only searches from a search box underneath certain top results (based on, the company says, “metrics that measure how useful the search box is to users”). It might be convenient if you stumble upon a site you didn’t know about in your own searching, but it’s also an easy way to help your less web-savvy Uncle Bif and Aunt Marge find what they’re looking for, rather than explaining the semantics of search to them.

Get Download Links to High Quality YouTube Vids

Firefox with Greasemonkey only: The YouTube H.264 user script adds a link to view and download the higher-quality version of YouTube videos in page. You already know how to hack YouTube URLs to access a higher resolution and audio quality version of a clip, and this script makes downloading the HQ version easy. (See the difference between regular and HQ videos.) Be warned: This script can take time to render the links (sometimes it hangs indefinitely), and the HQ version isn’t available for all videos. Once the kinks get ironed out, I’ll add it to the Better YouTube extension. The YouTube H.264 user script is a free download that works with Firefox and the Greasemonkey extension.

Your Ultimate Contacts Application?

We’ve got IMAP for email, iCal and other syncing options for calendars, but what about our address books? Most likely you use a combination of proprietary services like Facebook and other social networks, desktop address books, cell phone and webmail contact lists to keep track of who’s who in your life, but there’s still no easy way to maintain and sync your digital Rolodex wherever you need it.

Now that Google’s released the Contacts API—which lets apps easily access your Gmail contacts list—it feels like we’re a step closer to the possibility of a central, sync’ed address book. (Though the API uses a Google-specific data format.)

We’ve published some crazy-ass workarounds for syncing your address book the way you can do email with IMAP, and we’ve questioned people in charge of these things about possible solutions like LDAP, but so far, nothing feels like an adequate solution.

Do you have trouble keeping track of contacts? What’s your dream contact application syncing scenario? Tell us where you’d like to see Google’s Contacts API—or just the state of contact management overall—to go from here in the comments.
